Recognizing the Armed Forces Prior to August 31, 1949, each branch of the military had its own day of celebration--that is until the Secretary of Defense announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. Less than a year later, the President of the United States issued a presidential proclamation declaring a day of celebration recognizing all branches of the Armed Forces. The first official Armed Forces Day was held May 20, 1950.
